FARMING WITHIN MT VERNON PARK

Farming is taking place within Mt Vernon Park in  partnership with a local grazier. Grazing sheep do not belong to the Trust and under the supervision and management of the grazier / farmer.

Sheep and Lambs

Why are sheep in Mt Vernon Park?

Mt Vernon Park uses the grazing sheep as a fire mitigation. This is a  management practice to supress the growth of long grass.

Who do the sheep belong to?

The sheep grazing within Mt Vernon Park are owned and managed by a grazier. It is their responsibility to provide stock with water, maintain and manage the health of the flock.

What do I do if an animal is in distress?

Please let us know through the contacts page or if urgent please contact Christchurch City Council Port Hills Ranger team. Phone: 03 941 8999 (0800 800 169).

Please do not remove or interact with lambs or ewes.

Lambing Season

Between Late July and October is lambing season within Mt Vernon Park.

There are plenty of opportunities to see the newborns for yourself while visiting the park, but there are a few rules and restrictions in place during this time. They are set in place to ensure the newborns get the best start in the world possible, with minimal stress and human interaction. We ask that you please read and follow the information and rules below.
